How Polish Steps uses cookies

This page explains what cookies are, how Polish Steps uses them, and the choices you have.

1. What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are stored in your browser when you visit a website. They help the site remember information about you, such as whether you are logged in, which page you were on, or your preferences.

2. Who is responsible for these cookies?

Cookies on this website are set and used by Polish Steps (this learning platform), which is operated as a personal teaching project. If you have any questions about this policy, you can contact the site owner using the details provided on the contact or Preply page.

3. Which cookies do we use?

We aim to keep our use of cookies simple and limited to what is needed to make the site work and to give you a smooth learning experience.

Type Example Purpose How long?
Strictly necessary (session) Session cookie (e.g. PHPSESSID) Keeps you logged in as you move between pages and allows secure access to your account and lesson progress. Until you close your browser, or your session expires.
Security CSRF token cookie / session value Protects forms and actions against unauthorised requests (Cross-Site Request Forgery), helping to keep your account safe. For the duration of your session.
Preferences cookie_consent Remembers whether you have already seen and accepted the cookie banner so it does not keep appearing on every visit. Up to 1 year, unless you clear your cookies earlier.
Lesson experience (possible) Local or session storage, or small cookies In some cases we may remember simple settings, such as which lesson you were viewing or interface preferences, to make it easier to continue where you left off. Varies – either for the session or for a limited period.

We currently do not use advertising cookies or social media tracking pixels on this site. If this changes in the future, this policy will be updated and you will be able to make a clear choice about those cookies.

4. Legal basis for using cookies

For visitors in the UK and EU/EEA, some cookies are considered strictly necessary for the operation of the site – for example, the session cookie that keeps you logged in and allows you to use your account. These are used without separate consent because the site would not function properly without them.

For other cookies (such as the cookie_consent preference), we rely on your consent. You give this consent by clicking “Accept cookies” on the banner when you first visit the site.

5. Managing and deleting cookies

You can control cookies from Polish Steps (and other websites) in your browser settings. Depending on the browser you use, you can:

  • block cookies from specific sites,
  • block all third-party cookies,
  • clear existing cookies and site data,
  • set your browser to delete cookies whenever it is closed.

If you choose to block or delete certain cookies, some features of this site – such as staying logged in or saving your progress – may not work correctly.

6. Changes to this cookie policy

This policy may be updated from time to time, for example if we introduce new features or change the way cookies are used. If the changes are significant, we will highlight them on the site or show the cookie banner again so you can review your choices.
