Step 3 Introduction to Polish Digraphs

Introduction to Polish Digraphs

Polish Digraphs

In Polish, some sounds are written using two letters together. These letter pairs are called digraphs.

Although they are made of two letters, they represent one single sound and are not separate letters of the alphabet.

Step 4 Soft Sound Combinations

Soft Sound Combinations

Soft Sound Combinations

In Polish, some consonants become soft when they appear before a vowel.

These soft sounds can be written in two ways: as a single letter with a diacritic (like Ć, Ś, Ń, Ź, ) or as a letter combination with I (like CI, SI, NI, ZI, DZI).

Both forms represent the same sound, so they sound identical when spoken.

Step 5 Polish Spelling Rules- Introduction

Polish Spelling Rules- Introduction

Polish Spelling Rules

In Polish, some sounds can be written in different ways.

Examples:

U–Óit sounds the same: ulica / król

RZ–Żit sounds the same: rzeka / żaba

CH–Hit sounds the same: chleb / hotel

These are the same sounds, but they have different spellings depending on the word.

Although the pronunciation is identical, the spelling follows specific rules.

The full explanation of these rules can be found in the Grammar section: Polish Spelling Rules.
